ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Vietnamese Woman details Indian BF’s Forced Arranged Marriage
A Vietnamese woman has revealed that her Indian boyfriend is being forced into having an arranged marriage.
The woman took to Reddit to share her issue, revealing that she is desperate for advice.
In her post, the woman explained that she is a Vietnamese national who is currently in a long-distance relationship with a resident of Delhi.
She said they have been together for one year.
But at the end of August 2022, her 27-year-old boyfriend’s parents arranged a marriage for him against his wishes.
The marriage, which is to an Indian woman, is scheduled to take place in January 2023.
The Vietnamese woman said:
“Four days ago, my boyfriend was forced for an arranged marriage in next January, since his mom is now in the final stage of cancer – she wanted to rush all the things as soon as possible.”
The woman explained that she taking on a master’s program in the United States in 2023.
She also revealed that his parents did not arrange the marriage to her because she is not Indian.
“I am about to get a master’s program in the US next year, plus I am also a foreigner, so that’s why I was not chosen.”
The marriage was forcibly arranged despite the parents knowing that their son was already in a relationship.
The woman continued: “The thing is that their family has fully acknowledged our relationship, and I also travelled from my country to Delhi just to meet his mom just 1 month ago.”
Stating that the family duties are on him, she added:
“Since my boyfriend is the eldest son, all the family duties have put on his shoulders, and really we are stuck for what’s next.”
Her post attracted attention and many Reddit users weighed in on the situation.
One person claimed that she might be better off leaving him.
The user wrote: “I am an Indian married to a foreigner.
“The family obviously does not care for your feelings. They are also willing to force another random girl into an arranged marriage knowing that the boy is interested in someone else.
“If the boy is not fighting for you, prepare to bail out.
“It may seem hard now but after a couple of months, you will be happy that you dodged such people.”
Others said it was up to the boyfriend to stand up for himself.
One said: “Your boyfriend is 27 years old. Mature enough to stand up for himself and you.”
Another agreed: “Yup, indeed a 27 yo Indian male is mature enough to stand up in front of their parents.”
Some believed that his parents were using the cancer diagnosis to emotionally blackmail him into having an arranged marriage.
One person said: “I can already see his mother trying to manipulate him knowing she has cancer.”
